Tina Palmieri, M.D., is one of only a handful of female burn surgeons in the country, and she’s a member of an even more select group of women physicians to lead a nationally recognized pediatric burn program.
Dr. Palmieri was recently named chief of burns at the Neil Reitman Pediatric Burn Institute at Shriners Children’s Northern California, assuming the leadership position at the world-renowned facility after her friend and colleague David Greenhalgh, M.D., retires on June 30, 2024. Dr. Palmieri and Dr. Greenhalgh have worked together for more than 20 years.
Over the course of those two decades, the Neil Reitman Pediatric Burn Institute has grown to become the only comprehensive pediatric burn program in the western region of North America, offering state-of-the-art burn care, from initial management to critical care, inpatient care, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.
On average, Shriners Children’s Northern California treats more than 700 burn patients per year. While most patients come from within a 100-mile radius of Shriners Children’s Northern California, the pediatric sub-specialty hospital commonly treats children with acute burn injuries from as far away as Mexico and the Pacific Rim given its exceptional patient care and outcomes treating the most complex and complicated cases.
Dr. Palmieri says one of the most rewarding parts of her job is working not only with patients, but also with their families.
“Family involvement plays a vital role in a child’s recovery, so we prioritize family inclusion in all aspects of the patient care and recovery process,” she says. “We are committed to providing the care and rehabilitation children need to lead active, productive lives.”
