WM

WORKING TODAY FOR A MORE SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW®

Back Sponsored Jan 28, 2025

As North America’s leading provider of environmental solutions, WM’s operations across the U.S. and Canada are driven by a commitment to putting people first and achieving success with integrity. Whether by providing curbside collection to customers, investing in technology to transform waste into renewable energy or aiding the development of the communities it serves, WM is invested in building a future where people and the environment can thrive.

Since 1987, WM has proudly served as West Sacramento’s trusted waste collection partner, working to transform ambitious sustainability goals into tangible progress. This decades-long collaboration has helped the city secure its place as a municipal leader in environmental sustainability. A recent milestone in these efforts is the $29 million upgrade of the Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station (SRTS), located in the heart of Sacramento’s business park.

Now a state-of-the-art hub, SRTS can process up to 121,000 tons of material annually and approximately 605 tons of recyclables daily — significantly advancing the region’s recycling capabilities. “We’re investing in recycling technology that aligns with public policy and environmental priorities and supports our municipal customers in reaching their sustainability goals,” says WM Area Vice President Alex Oseguera.

The company also collaborates closely with West Sacramento and other municipal partners to educate customers on the importance of proper material sorting, which plays a vital role in promoting the circular economy and meeting statewide diversion regulations. In West Sacramento, WM has a dedicated recycling coordinator working directly with businesses to offer tools and personalized guidance to ensure compliance and support their goals.

“Our commitment to education, innovation and social responsibility drives us to invest in solutions to address today’s challenges and pave the way to a more sustainable future,” says Oseguera.

The SRTS upgrade project is part of WM’s broader plan to invest over $1.4 billion in new and upgraded recycling facilities. By the end of 2026, these investments are expected to add approximately 2.8 million tons of incremental annual processing capacity. As demand for recycled-content products continues to grow, these upgrades will enhance WM’s ability to manage materials and expand recycling access for its customers.
