For 20 years, The Gathering Inn has been a beacon of hope, empowering individuals on their journey from homelessness to sustainable housing. What began as a modest winter shelter in Roseville has evolved into a lifeline of support, providing year-round emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing and medical respite care across Placer and Sacramento counties.
“We lift people up and journey with them through a continuum of care,” says President and CEO Keith Diederich. “To help achieve our vision of communities without homelessness, we offer three core programs across 15 locations and we are looking to expand further.”
TGI’s five emergency shelters serve people experiencing homelessness, accommodating 390 guests who may stay up to six months. Case managers create an individualized growth plan for each guest.
Darlene Cullivan, chief philanthropy officer, says, “Our case managers form essential relationships with each guest, helping to identify and break down the barriers to stable housing. Through these connections, we offer comprehensive wraparound services, including mental health support, addiction recovery, life skills training, job readiness, medical care and more.”
TGI offers permanent supportive housing through seven homes, serving 33 previously homeless people who are now long-term tenants. The homes provide comfortable residential settings, each with multiple bedrooms, shared kitchens and communal space.
Since 2009, TGI supports those experiencing both medical need and homelessness through medical respite care. Battling health challenges such as cancer, diabetes or hip replacements, guests are referred by medical professionals upon discharge from area hospitals. Supporting their safe recuperation, TGI accommodates 10 guests at a time at their facility in Auburn. The program has successfully secured improved housing outcomes for 83% of clients.
“Our programs are caring, but also business competent with measurable outcomes,” explains Diederich. “We provide high-quality services at a reasonable cost, with 88% of every dollar going directly to programs. Our mission thrives thanks to the generosity and compassion of our public-private partners, ensuring sustainable solutions for those in need without overburdening local resources.”
