DPR Construction, a forward-thinking global self-performing commercial contractor and construction manager, specializes in complex projects in the life science, commercial, health care, advanced technology and higher education markets. The company is also recognized for its strong commitment to valuing and supporting women in the industry.
“Having an avenue to share ideas and ambitions and receive feedback and advice to best represent myself is invaluable.”— Kaitlin Murchison, Project Executive
DPR has long been the presenting sponsor of the SRBX/CIEF Women in Construction conference held annually in Sacramento. For this year’s conference, hundreds of women will converge from across the nation to hear acclaimed speakers, participate in panel discussions, and share their experiences, insights and advice.
“This event really empowers women to excel through motivating presentations, useful conversations, career insights and the ability to network with peers nationwide,” says Kaitlin Murchison, one of DPR’s Sacramento leadership team members and project executive. “This year, two of our DPR superintendents are highlighting field leadership — a less traditional role for women — and what it can look like. Discussions about the different career paths that women have in the industry are one of the benefits of the conference.”
DPR also supports women through Build(Her), one of eight voluntary, employee-led and company-sponsored employee resource groups. Build(Her) is DPR’s largest, longest-running and most tenured ERG and meets online quarterly. This group enables discussion and advancement of culture, career, community and commerce to enhance and empower women’s roles in construction.
“We have a couple of hundred participants during our quarterly sessions, including men who are allies,” says Murchison. During those online sessions, breakout groups offer the chance for smaller-scale discussions. In addition, local Build(Her) get-togethers enable employees of DPR’s Sacramento office to brainstorm and share experiences in person.
“The information and camaraderie shared through Build(Her) is such an important aspect of the career I’ve been able to build at DPR,” notes Murchison. “Having an avenue to share ideas and ambitions and receive feedback and advice to best represent myself is invaluable.”
