Charles Vincent McDonald

Back Photographer

Charles Vincent McDonald was born in Spokane, Washington, and later moved with his family to Arlington, Virginia. Like many others, Charles first began photographing with an 35mm film camera for his high school newspaper and yearbook publications. After high school, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. When asked what he wanted to do in the service he gave the same consistent answer: to attend the U.S. Naval School of Photography. He did and was actually recognized with the “First-in-Class” award upon graduation.

Charles has an extensive technical background involving the daily operation of a photographic film darkroom in positions as a darkroom technician. His past employers include General Electric Company, NASA’s Goddard Space Center, Chartmasters, and Allen Photo Service. Charles retired from staff positions at UC Davis in 2011. His employment on campus ranged from the UC Davis Bookstore, the Art & Photography Group at IET Mediaworks, Accounting & Financial Services.  He ended his career in support of Extramural Grant Funding.

Charles used his full-time career positions at UC Davis to return to photography in the role of a freelance/contract photographer. His photography has received multiple ribbon awards, and public exhibitions of his work include the Buehler Gallery, UC Davis Alumni Center, Woodland’s 1st Friday Art Walk, 2nd Friday Davis ArtAbout, Gallery 1855, Gallery 625, and Gallery 1075 in Yolo County.

His list of volunteer photographic assignments for local nonprofits include Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Greater Sacramento Area, Sacramento Roller Derby, Yolo Arts Council, Gallery 1855, Women’s History Month Committee, and the UC Davis Retiree Association.

In 2017, Charles self-published Roller Derby Pictured in both book & magazine formats.
