Bernadette Austin is principal of Bernadette Austin Consulting Services and a mother of a kindergartener and a preschooler. She is co-chair of the Women’s Leadership Initiative for the Urban Land Institute and vice chair of the West Sacramento Planning Commission. She serves on the board of directors for her son’s cooperative preschool and is president of the regional chapter of the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools.

Great Mothers Make Great Leaders
For me, and all the mothers I know, the experience of being a parent has influenced every aspect of our lives, including our careers. I have found that women who make great leaders also make great mothers, and great mothers also have the skills to be great leaders. But employers don’t always see that connection.
