As the Sacramento Kings get ready to kick off the NBA season Thursday night, the chefs at Golden 1 Center have been busy creating new food treats for fans.
Typical for our Farm-to-Fork region, the emphasis is on local ingredients and restaurants, and each year Legends Hospitality Executive Chef Brien Kuznicki works with his staff to come up with new offerings to get fans excited. Ninety percent of the food used will come from local farms, ranches, growers and bakers.
“We are lucky and fortunate to live in an abundance of agriculture that surrounds us, so we partner with thousands of farms, and we source all the local and freshest ingredients. And that’s not always so easy when you’re trying to serve 17,000 hungry fans every day here at Golden 1 Center,” John Rinehart, president of business operations, said at a media tasting event. He added there will be pop-up kitchens throughout the season at the arena.
Sure to be a fan favorite is the King Kocktail, a purple blend of tequila blanco, prickly pear and lime juices, blueberry puree and muddled blueberries. It was a big hit at media day last week, and maybe the best thing about it is that fans get to keep the shaker it’s made in, which is sketched with the Kings logo. They can reuse it at home to make their own cocktails and mocktails. Keeping with the purple theme, there’s the new “Light the Beam” churro, which is dusted with purple sugar sprinkles and comes with a chocolate dipping sauce.
“It’s going to bring a little love, a little bit of excitement,” Kuznicki says.
A bunch of new sandwiches are being offered this year, including a beef dip, made with a hearty offering of thin-sliced grass-fed beef and melted provolone topped with creamy horseradish, that comes with a container of au jus. There’s also the Cajun chicken sandwich, deeply spiced and topped with sauteed onions and cheddar cheese on a bun from Posh Bakery on Fruitridge Road. A porchetta sandwich with pickled onions is offered on Village Bakery rolls they get from Davis, and a chicken gyro on fresh pita bread is also new this year.
My favorite was Star Ginger’s Thai curry chicken bowl, which came with jasmine rice, sauteed kale, edamame, carrot and daikon slaw.
And for the traditionalist, you can enjoy either a classic grilled cheese or grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich accompanied by tomato soup to dip it in.
The new food items will be placed at various locations around the arena. You can find where they’re sold on the Kings’ website.
The Kings tip off their new season Oct. 24 against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden 1 Center.
