This year, Stanford Sierra Youth & Families (SSYAF) proudly celebrates 125 years of service. Since its founding in 1900, the organization has remained steadfast in its mission to support vulnerable youth and families, continuously evolving to meet their changing needs. From its beginnings as an orphanage to its transformation into a dynamic community-based organization, SSYAF continues to ensure that every young person has the family, stability and resources needed to thrive.
The organization’s journey has been one of growth and transformation. A pivotal moment came in 2019 when Stanford Youth Solutions and Sierra Forever Families merged, strengthening SSYAF’s ability to address the complex challenges youth and families face today. This union expanded the continuum of care, allowing for holistic support at every stage of a family’s journey.
Today, SSYAF’s services include family stabilization, behavioral and mental health support, substance use prevention and treatment, juvenile justice intervention, mentoring, and foster care and adoption services. Each program is designed to break the cycle of child welfare involvement, ensuring children remain safe, families are strengthened and long-term success is within reach.
“For 125 years, our organization has been a pillar of support for youth and families in need. Our impact is measured not just in numbers but in the lives we help transform.” -Laura Heintz, Psy.D, CEO

A Journey of Healing and Hope: Scotty’s Story*
The impact of SSYAF’s work is best seen through the lives it transforms. One such story is Scotty’s — a young boy who, after facing instability and trauma, found healing, hope and a nurturing family through the support of SSYAF.
Scotty entered foster care after being removed from a dangerous environment. He moved between multiple homes, struggling with trauma and feelings of rejection. His school attendance declined and he withdrew emotionally.
That’s when Rachael, a social worker at SSYAF, stepped in. She built a trusting relationship with Scotty, connected him with specialized therapy and encouraged his passion for art as a positive outlet. With Rachael’s support, Scotty regained confidence and stability.
When it was time to find Scotty a permanent home, Rachael introduced him to the Robinsons, a couple eager to adopt. Through careful planning and ongoing guidance, Scotty and the Robinsons bonded and he finally found the safe, nurturing home he needed. Today, Scotty is thriving — excelling in school, pursuing his love of art and embracing a brighter future.
