Shriners Children’s Northern California is the Sacramento region’s only freestanding children’s hospital providing highly specialized care for patients requiring treatment for acute burns, traumatic injuries including spinal cord injuries, cleft lip, complex colorectal disorders, chest wall anomalies and a broad range of orthopedic and neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.
Thanks to the generosity of Shriners and the community, all children benefit from expert care regardless of their family’s ability to pay. The more than 11,500 children treated last year benefited from care funded primarily from philanthropic sources. Each donor plays a part in the recovery of seriously injured children or in the milestone achievements of children born with complex congenital conditions.
“Our Gift of Care Campaign at the end of each year provides community members with the opportunity to help transform the lives of children treated in 2025,” says Alan Anderson, senior director of philanthropy. “We encourage everyone to take part in this campaign by Dec. 31. People can visit shrinerschildrens.org/sacramento for patient stories and to give online.”
Shriners Children’s Northern California is mindful that the money for expenses is primarily philanthropic and intended for the benefit of children in their care. Direct patient care accounted for more than 75% of all dollars spent during 2023 and spending on all medical services accounted for more than 86% of every dollar spent.
“Shriners Children’s is well known for our promise to care for every child regardless of a family’s ability to pay,” notes Anderson. “However, people are less familiar with our commitment to excellence or with the breadth of our specialties.”
Shriners Children’s Northern California wants to increase public recognition of its role as a best-choice destination. They are also refreshing facilities to reflect their commitment to excellence, including inpatient nursing units, thanks to a generous lead and matching gift from the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, and the outdoor play terrace, thanks to an individual donor.
“We want every family whose child would benefit from our care to know that their child is eligible and will ultimately benefit more than they can imagine by getting treatment with us,” concludes Anderson.
