Heather Lim has garnered great success in the construction industry, taking over in January 2023 as president of Pacific Coast Building Services, a group of specialty contracting companies including Alcal Specialty Contracting and Alcal Glass Systems in the Sacramento area.
“I oversee our strategic growth and partner with our leadership team to ensure we’re growing according to our values and meeting our customers’ expectations for safe and successful jobsites,” she says.
Pacific Coast believes in developing people from within the organization, and Lim is an ideal example. She began with the company in 2016 as an HR assistant. During her many years in HR, she also took on overseeing the company’s safety program. In 2018, she was promoted to vice president of operations, a role that included her previous responsibilities along with overseeing marketing and risk management and heavy involvement in IT projects, joint venture partnerships, and a leadership development program.
“I’m happy to be an example of someone taking a non-traditional career path in this industry.” — Heather Lim, President
Backed by bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology, Lim is known for her superb communication skills. “I enjoy working with people and being part of a collaborative team,” she says. “I listen to people, let them speak their opinion, and I voice my opinion so people hear my perspective. I believe open communication helps build trust.”
A board member for the Construction Industry Education Foundation, Lim believes students should consider construction and the trades for great career paths that don’t necessarily require any college education. “Construction is competitive, exciting, and comes with the satisfaction of seeing projects shape our communities,” she notes. “I’m happy to be an example of someone taking a non-traditional career path in this industry.”
Looking to the future, Lim will ensure Pacific Coast Building Services remains a great company with a variety of career development opportunities and will ultimately look to grow the company with complementary trades and new markets.
