Meals on Wheels in Sacramento has long been a lifeline for the community it serves, providing not only nutritious meals, but also a source of comfort and companionship to countless seniors across the region. This vital organization has been steadfast in its mission to ensure that no senior goes hungry or feels isolated, providing hot meals and warm smiles to those in need.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to many sectors, and Meals on Wheels was no exception. However, the organization’s response to the crisis showcased its resilience and dedication. With the senior population being among the most vulnerable to the virus, the demand for Meals on Wheels services surged. Before the pandemic, Meals on Wheels served approximately 1,500 seniors daily. That number has since consistently grown and is now closer to 2,000, reflecting both the increased need and the organization’s capacity to adapt and expand its services rapidly.
As the population of older adult individuals continues to grow, Meals on Wheels is preparing to meet the future head-on. The organization is currently undergoing an exciting rebranding effort, with “Meals on Wheels by ACC” renamed “Meals on Wheels Sacramento County” aimed at amplifying its presence and impact within the community.
This rebranding is not merely cosmetic — it is a strategic initiative designed to enhance awareness, attract more volunteers and secure additional funding to sustain and expand operations. The goal is to ensure that every senior in need can receive the support they deserve.
Expansion plans are at the forefront of Meals on Wheels’ agenda. The organization aims to broaden its reach, not just in terms of the number of meals delivered, but also in the array of services offered. Plans include the introduction of more comprehensive wellness checks, a “friendly visitor” program and the provision of additional resources to help seniors maintain their independence and quality of life.
“Volunteers do so much more than just deliver meals. They provide a crucial human connection — one that many may take for granted until they themselves become seniors.” says Linda Revilla, director of strategic initiatives. “In 2023 alone, we served nearly 450,000 meals to 4,100 seniors in Sacramento County. We will surpass those numbers in 2024. In order to keep up that pace and grow, volunteers will always be a big key to that. We also hope to attract new donors and corporate sponsors and hold more fundraising events.”
For many seniors, the visit from a Meals on Wheels volunteer is the highlight of their day, offering not just food, but also a friendly face and a sense of belonging. The organization’s success is inextricably linked to the dedication and compassion of its volunteers.

The Sacramento community also plays a vital role in the sustenance and growth of Meals on Wheels. Local businesses, donors and community members contribute in various ways, from financial support to in-kind donations and volunteer hours. An exciting component of this is the restaurant partnerships the organization has built. The program works with restaurants such as Drewski’s to give seniors a chance to dine in on specially planned meals that cater to the varied health needs of our bodies as they age. One recipient said recently, “I cannot say enough nice things about this restaurant and your program,” says Renee N. “you have helped me to eat and make friends at the same time. Thank you!”
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the program is the stories of those who have been touched by its services. Many seniors have expressed how these meals and visits have made a significant difference in their lives, providing not only nourishment, but also hope and a sense of community.
“Life has been challenging for us,” says Lavonia O. “However, Meals on Wheels has helped to sustain us through these challenges. The gentleman that delivers the food has a wonderful smile and personality! Today he delivered the meals with a bouquet of flowers. He said, ‘They are for you’ and I started crying because the kind gesture was an unexpected surprise. I want to thank you all.”
As Meals on Wheels Sacramento County looks to the future, there is a palpable sense of optimism and determination. The rebranding efforts, coupled with plans for expansion, signal a bright future for the organization and the seniors it serves. By continuing to adapt and grow, Meals on Wheels aims to ensure that every older adult in Sacramento County can age with dignity, well-nourished and connected to their community.
