Meals on Wheels in Sacramento has undergone a significant transformation, aligning itself with the national Meals on Wheels organization while expanding its services to meet the evolving needs of local seniors.
The organization, known as “Meals on Wheels by ACC,” rebranded in July 2024 to doing business as (dba) “Meals on Wheels Sacramento County.” This change included adopting national branding standards featuring a new color scheme of navy blue, teal and lime green. Despite the new look, the organization’s core mission remains unchanged.
“Our look has certainly changed,” says newly christened Executive Director Mindy Klick, “and that kind of change will always require an adjustment for folks who are used to seeing the previous iteration. However, despite our organization’s appearance changing, what hasn’t is the amazing work we do serving thousands of older adults around our area.”
Since its formation in 2010, the organization has experienced significant growth. It now serves over 1,500 older adults through home-delivered meals and an additional 800 through community cafes and restaurant partners. With 30 staff members and over 200 volunteers — most involved in meal delivery — the organization has become a cornerstone of senior support in the area.
One of the more notable additions to their already large menu of services is that Meals on Wheels Sacramento County now includes pet food in their deliveries through their AniMeals program. Klick explains that the initiative recognizes the crucial role pets play in seniors’ lives, providing companionship and emotional support.
“A lot of people may not realize it, but so many of the older adults we serve would rather share the food we give them with their pets than have their pets go hungry,” she says. “Being able to provide healthy food for their dogs and cats on top of for themselves has made a world of difference. Not just in the pets’ health, but in the mental and emotional wellbeing of the people who care for them.”
In 2023, the AniMeals program served more than 14,000 meals to 124 dogs and 139 cats. This service ensures that seniors don’t have to choose between feeding themselves or their beloved companions.
As Meals on Wheels Sacramento County moves forward, it is well positioned to continue making a significant impact on the lives of Sacramento County’s senior residents.
