Established in 2010, Meals on
Wheels by ACC (MoW)
improves and enhances the dignity and quality of life for
Sacramento County seniors, helping them stay in their homes
and communities by providing nutritious meals, social contact
and
community resources. This nonprofit serves seniors aged 60
and
better with a focus on those with the greatest economic or
social
need. The impact of this work is enormous — MoW is on track
to
serve approximately 500,000 meals to 4,100 seniors during 2023.
MoW currently operates 13 lunch centers called All Seasons
Cafes
at senior living complexes, faith-based organizations and
community
centers throughout Sacramento County. These sites fulfill two
critical
needs for senior participants:
• the ability to enjoy a nutritious meal
• the ability to socialize with each other and volunteers.
For many, it may be their only outing during the day and the
only
chance to interact with people. One participant says, “I see
my
friends, we eat lunch and laugh and talk. I go home happy.”
MoW also provides meal delivery to homebound, isolated
seniors,
a service that changes their lives for the better in more ways
than
one. Volunteers deliver meals and friendship and may be the
only personal contact some seniors have. About 200 dedicated
volunteers deliver food and a smile, but MoW needs even more
people to help deliver this important service that provides
meals,
safety checks and social connections.
Kirk Utzinger, MoW’s newly appointed executive director, says
that
MoW is grateful for all volunteers, as without them,
operations
would grind to a halt. He says that donations are also critical
to the
organization’s ability to provide meals and services.
“The holidays are hard for many older adults who have outlived
their
family and friends,” he says. “This holiday season, Meals on Wheels
challenges Comstock’s readers to help our volunteer delivery
teams
serve more nutritious meals and friendly smiles to homebound
seniors than ever before. Comstock’s readers who make a $250
or
greater tax-deductible donation to Meals on Wheels by ACC
before
Dec. 31, 2023, will be doing just that!”

The work of volunteers clearly benefits the seniors in need, but also offers benefits to MoW volunteers themselves. “The seniors give back to me as much as I give to them,” says Roy Jones, a member of MoW’s board of directors and a volunteer driver since the program began almost 14 years ago. “Everyone has a story and I love hearing their stories. It’s good for me, too. The social aspect of Meals on Wheels’ work is equally critical and an important part of our services.”
Belinda, a homebound participant, gratefully receives MoW
services,
which enables her to continue living in her home. “Meals on
Wheels
helps me tremendously, otherwise I would starve because I am in
my
bed and cannot get on my feet,” she says. “I eat only Meals on
Wheels
meals — I am a small eater and I eat from each meal twice a day.
The
volunteers are so nice … They help me keep my sanity since I need
a
human being to talk to. I admire them all, young and old.”
