The Future Foundation of Sacramento is a nonprofit that provides scholarships to high-achieving students from at-risk backgrounds who are first-in-family to attend college. Future Foundation awards five-year scholarships of $5,000 per year, totaling $25,000.
A key Future Foundation fundraiser is their annual Fairway to the Future golf tournament, hosted by Sacramento City Council member and former NFL Oakland Raider Rick Jennings. Launched more than a decade ago, this fundraiser is popular within charitable circles and has awarded more than 90 scholarships.
On Feb. 25, 2023, the foundation will host a fundraising speaking engagement entitled “Justice Served” featuring Donald Webster, Esq., former senior counsel for the United Nations Tribunal who obtained convictions of the Rwandan government officials who perpetrated the Rwandan genocide. The event will be held at Sacramento venue The Sofia.
Fundraiser participation and donor gifts have enabled Future Foundation to provide college scholarships to local high-school students who are first-in-family to attend college. Beyond providing scholarships, students are also assisted with FAFSA assistance, tutoring, college applications and career mentoring. Board member Bill Bevier says, “I mentored students in my engineering firm and was so touched by the program and joined the board.”
“More than just helping us get into college, Future Foundation is committed to helping us through it! ” Aime, Future Foundation scholarship recipient
“Future Foundation stays with each student from high school through college offering guidance and support,” says Robert Luke, vice president. Students have had the opportunity to attend UC Davis, UC Berkeley, NYU, Sacramento State, Stanford, UCLA and other noteworthy schools nationwide, with degrees in engineering, computer science, math and the arts, with several continuing on to graduate and professional schools.
Scholarship recipient Aime sums up the impact of the program, saying, “This scholarship not only took the economic stress off my family’s shoulders, but it showed me, and all of us, that more than just helping us get into college, Future Foundation is committed to helping us through it!”
