In 1999, the Capitol Station District was formed to revitalize this area and named for a proposed multi-model transportation hub. Clarke Rosa was on the board of directors for this project for 10+ years. When plans changed and the station was no longer to be built, the organization rebranded as The River District with the focus of developing the area along the Sacramento and American River around Richards Boulevard.
The renovation of their new location was extensive, inside and out. From no more than a shell of a building, they were able to create a popular restaurant frequented by local law enforcement agencies, park rangers, game wardens, state workers and residents as well as their card-playing customers that have been in their new location since May 2000. Highway 160, which now runs through downtown Sacramento as what we know as 16th Street, was once lined with numerous gas and service stations, we know this as they had to pull out a few old underground fuel storage tanks where the north parking lot now sits. Later, after many soil tests, the journey continued into a thriving business in The River District that employs approximately 200+ people from all backgrounds.
Sacramento Regional Transit just broke ground on a $45 million project named the Dos Rios Station, a new light rail station, to provide efficient transportation to the new affordable housing complex Mirasol Village. This project is located where 12th and 16th streets come together at the end of Richards Boulevard. The new Dos Rios Station is literally across the street from Capitol Casino.
Capitol Casino would like to thank all the board members of the various committees from the original Capitol Station District, The River District and the many more individuals who have poured thousands of hours of their time and efforts to revitalize this new up-and-coming area of Sacramento and we’re looking forward to a bright future.
