Rob Winkler, CEO of 5th Planet Games in Rocklin, offers his insight into changes in the local game development industry. For more from Winkler, check out “Dawn of the Developers” in our December issue. Sign up for our newsletter and we’ll email you when it’s available online.

What is the biggest change you’ve seen in the local game development industry in the past year?

The biggest change I have seen in the last year is that the quality of the work is going up across the board, not just any one team. The games I have seen recently are looking and playing much better than those in the past. One I have liked recently was Idle Outbreak by TableStar Games, who are based here in Sacramento.

What do you foresee as the biggest change on the horizon in the year to come?

I am hopeful that the change on the horizon is that indie teams like the ones we have here locally are able to get more exposure in the market, and build up a business around their work. That has always been difficult, but as the quality bar goes up recently, so do the chances of a breakout success.
