When a new client hears his barber’s name is Renee, he might envision an “old French dude” and not a young woman. The industry remains, after all, a field of men. “When I was in school, it was me and 60 dudes,” says Renee Green, 29 (pictured standing).
“It’s still very male-dominated, but I am seeing successful women in our industry.” She’s among them. In addition to earning both her barber and cosmetologist licenses, Green owns Jimmy’s Barber Garage in midtown Sacramento.
She and her parents opened the shop in June 2013, and named it after Green’s grandpa. “I know a lot about the hair aspect, but I didn’t know how to make a business, how to deal with taxes and the numbers,” she says. “We would not be able to do this without each other.”
Before opening Jimmy’s Barber Garage, Renee Green — an Auburn native — worked in Los Angeles and San Diego. She dreamt of running her own business and recognized a gap in Sacramento’s barbershop scene: While most rent booths, she made her shop commission-based and pays an hourly wage.
Green employs 18 barbers and stylists, plus receptionists. Her clientele is mostly men, and she offers haircuts, shaves and beard shaping.
Her favorite cut is a textured one with lots of edges and creativity on top, and precise, zero fades on the sides. For Green, who has spent 11 years perfecting her craft, the more meticulous the haircut, the better.
